Resilience earns town first point of 2016

Luton Town arrived in Letchworth with Octobers 3-0 defeat still fresh I their minds.

The match started strongly for the visitors, with a majority of the possession with the away side, who managed to muster a few strong chances early on. An experienced Letchworth side held on however and after a miscommunication between Martin Crimp and keeper Thomas Briggs, fired themselves into a fortunate lead. Town Continued strongly, using Steven Pierce and Nathan McNeil's pace down the wings to launch several strong attacks.

The next goal was Letchworth's however, when a swift counter attack lead to a Penalty Stroke, which flew in to the bottom left hand corner despite the best efforts of Briggs in goal. Town's heads dropped at this point and the home side were on top for the following few minutes, but the introduction of Kyle Beirne and Harpreet Uppal from the Bench gave a welcome injection of pace into the game. With play now flowing end to end, William King and Robin Barnes had plenty to feed off, but to no avail. A short corner effort from Josh Wearing was deflected just wide by Dean Pierce, whilst Hayden Haywood assisted another Near Miss by Steven Pierce.

Town Kept plugging away and finally pulled one back just minutes before half time when William King scored a fine drag from a short corner.

Half Time Score Letchworth 2-1 Luton Town

The visitors turned the end to end game into domination of possession, with Letchworth scarcely able to keep to grips with Luton's diversity and pace. The reds were able to maintain their flow despite going down to ten men when Russell Maidment was handed a harsh Green Card for hitting the ball away, when he believed a free hit had been awarded in his favour. After a couple of difficult decisions, Luton began to get worked up, with Robin Barnes effort ricocheting off the goalkeeper after the whistle had already gone for a short corner, and William Kings fine finish ruled off for the same reason, there was a growing feeling of dissent in the air, with first a home player, and then Luton Goal scorer King both Receiving Green Cards for complaints, and Luton's Josh Wearing almost meeting the same fate. Letchworth almost had a chance to secure the points from a short corner, only to be denied by Keeper Thomas Briggs pulling off a superb Triple save before clearing the ball.

The visitors continued to push with Martin Crimp Cutting out every Letchworth attack whilst Right Back George Ball began forcing his way higher up the pitch and helping to create another barrage of short corners. Robin Barnes forced a strong save from the keeper whilst Dean Pierce was disappointed to see his effort blocked on the line before firing the rebound into the side of the goal.

The Game became eve more stretched and with two minutes to go Luton finally hit home after a strong hit through the middle from Josh Wearing was cleverly left by Robin Barnes to leave William King 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper who neatly netted from an acute angle to give Luton Town a well deserved and hard fought point.
