Luton Town 1st XI kicked off the opening of their 2013/14 season with a resounding away victory over Southend 1st XI.

Newly promoted Luton were slow to start, but soon got to grips with the faster pace of the division and we're evenly matched by Southend.
Southend couldn't capitalise on a succession of chances culminating in a series of penalty corners midway through the first half. A fine display by Luton's goal keeper Tom Dobson who was set to retire at the end of last season but again shows why he is still number 1 with a truly remarkable double save to set up the counter attack leading to some quick interchange passing from Skipper Gary Newman to the veteran of the team Graham Bright to finish with a deft touch to put Luton 1-0 up.

2nd half Luton Town started the stronger, but Southed not wanted to start the season with zero points from the opener started to apply the pressure with chance after chance but could just not beat Luton's number 1. Even down to 10 men after Tom Kavanagh was shown a yellow card for descent Luton remained strong and held to their narrow lead. 5 minutes to go and Graham Bright gets his brace with another good finish to take the pressure off and put the game to bed.

Final Score
Luton Town 1st XI -2
Southend 1st XI -0

Great start to what is surely going to prove to be a very difficult season for Luton.
