Calm and composed Luton Town HC make it 3 wins on the trot.

A soggy drizzle fell as the boys in red stood waiting for the sharp whistle to start what would be 3 wins on the trot. After shaky beginnings this season, and an even shakier bright orange St. Albans pullover donned by Joe, a victory was needed to ensure Luton remained in the top half of the table for another week.

The weather was miserable but spirits were high as Luton began the first half with passion, pressing early and not giving the Bishop’s Stortford 2’s room to breathe. Patel gave the visitors’ keeper the courtesy of continuing the pre-game warm up into the first 10 minutes of the game. Sending several shots at his pads, allowing him to get his eye in. The constant pressure had to give eventually, and it did with a goal straight from the training ground. Pikey threw a perfectly weighted aerial from left back, it was picked by John who stormed down the left half, embarrassing of the 2 cannon fodder they decided to send his way. Head up. Kieran made a darting run to the corner and received the ball in space, he quickly passed it back to Hathaway who was now screaming for it at top D. With no one in the way but the goalkeeper - the number 45 kept his cool, dropped his shoulder to the left, and selflessly whipped it to Cam, who on the back post made an absolute meal out of it, but eventually slotted it home to into an empty net. 1-0.

Luton didn’t wait long to strike again. John, led top D into space to receive a well worked ball that had been held onto for what seemed hours for the tired, chasing, Bishop’s Stortford bodies. With his back to goal, a quick fake to the left, and spin to the right, created the space that was needed to break a million hearts. His helmet was stifling, it narrowed his vision. And he must see far. His shield was heavy. It threw him off balance. And his target was far away. With a cry of “reverse” ringing in his ears from teammate, and recently accoladed DJ… Patel, there was only one place this ball was going. Resounding contact was made with the inside edge of the Dita stick. Silence. Everyone watched. Moving was futile.

Umpire Dan put another dash next to Luton’s name. 2-0. (Side note- I’d like to draw attention to Dan’s dedication to the sport, and encourage him to keep putting in the effort, because I can see him playing alongside the 1s any week now).

The Luton defence decided that keeping a clean sheet was not on the agenda and allowed a slow moving shot roll into the neglected Luton goal. Gary, Anwar, Pikey, and Mark all left looking at each other wondering what happened, but the team came to the mutual decision that Anwar should have a lie down on the side line (a punishment he gracefully accepted) and for the rest of the game Mark’s efforts would be best placed in giving the team regular time updates, rather than tending the goal. And may I commend him on his performance of his new role. Easy now.

Before the game was over another 4 goals were slammed home from short corners. The hard work put in to get our corners consistent is really showing off. So huge props to David and Phil for rounding off the game with rock solid finishes - 2 goals each.

6-1 was the final score, it could have been more, but a display of absolute control and dominance none of the less. Broxbourne 2s are next in the firing line. Only time will tell if they will put up a better fight.
