Stags no match for rampant Town

Dusk was settling over Watford Grammar as LTHC Men’s 1s found themselves pushing-back at what can only be described as an ungodly hour; at this time on a Saturday the team are usually closer to three pints rather than points but knew that on this night the beers would have to wait. After a hard-fought win the week before we knew the job that needed to be done, and the Luton faithful making the journey to Watford were not disappointed; this, ladies and gentleman, was poetry in motion.

Luton started the game and from the off looked the stronger team, dictating play from the back and moving forward with an intensity that had been so lacking the week before. After some slick possession play and a long spell of pressure, we found the back of the net with Cameron Sarrington rifling home after fifteen minutes. I won’t sit here and lie saying that I remember every goal, but what I can tell you is that Luton had finally learned how to be clinical; halftime came and despite being 4-0 up, a rousing team talk from leadership left no doubt in our minds that ruthlessness was needed in the second half.

And ruthless we were ladies and gentleman, with the Gegenpress seen in previous weeks being used to full effect here again. Yet again our counterparts had no answer. Yet again Luton was younger, fitter and quicker than the opposition. But this week we had found our cutting edge. Indeed with 60 minutes gone and at 5-0 up Luton were conjuring up goals from literally nothing, with Reece Sarrington despatching an audacious effort from the acutest of angles. The cheekiness of this finish was matched only minutes later when Garry Newman – fresh from a moment of intimacy with his opposite number – popped up in the D to nick the ball on the volley one-handed past the keeper.

Needless to say that at this point in the evening Luton were enjoying themselves. As cheers from the fan contingent could be heard rattling around the ground it was becoming clear that victory was on the cards, but a Men’s 1s match would not be complete without a last-minute cock-up. This week Joe Herbert was happy to oblige; conscious that Mark D’Cruz was feeling a bit bored at the back, he played a hospital pass straight into the path of the opposition. It takes vision to play a ball that bad, but luckily our defence showed their class to save Joe’s blushes. Luton were professional to see the game out 8-0, and will take their momentum into some important fixtures before the Christmas break.
