It was a chilly start to Luton Ladies' fixture in Welwyn this week but the overcast skies did little to dampen the team's spirits.
As soon as the team bounded towards the pitch, it became clear that the host team's pitch was (in technical terms) 'very bouncy'; it was just another thing to put a spring in the Luton team's step!
After the traditional 'stick rattle', 't' drop and a roar of 'Lu'on!', the Luton Ladies were ready to work their magic on the Welwyn 4 side.
The first half was fiercely fought, with some members of the red shirts struggling to maintain balance on the trampoline-like pitch. A chorus of Luton voices roared: "These balls are bouncing all over the place!" Indeed they were and only added to the frustrations of Luton being so tantalisingly close to the Welwyn goal on a number of occasions.Welwyn were keeping pace with Luton, with attempts coming near to the Luton D but it was still stalemate by the half-time.
Following the half-time pep talk, Luton were ready to launch a fresh campaign to shake up the 0-0 scoreline. Perhaps it was Gale's Harry Potter inspired spellcasting, maybe it was Katie and Julie's search for a wand, but whatever it was - it worked.
Helen was able to weave through the Welwyn defence to net Luton their first goal of the second half.
However, it felt only a mere few moments later that saw a breakaway moment from Welwyn, placing a sneaky goal in the Luton goal. Things were becoming tense as the scoreline shifted to 1-1.
Indeed, like the magical world of the Potter, not all sails smoothly in the realm of hockey: Taz pulled off quite the trick shot by getting toe-to-toe with the Welwyn goalkeeper and then tripping over, headbutting her own hockey stick!
Thankfully, Taz came off unscathed and went on to score the second well-sought goal of the match for Luton.

Final score: Luton conjure up a 2-1 win.

Moment of the match: Becky (for her Tigger impressions when falling over at least three times and bouncing back up again)
