Opening match of the season and the team were in good spirits and had a full set of subs on the bench. First match of the season was also an important one for Julie Halsey and Emma Halsey, mother and daughter playing their first league match together.
Match started well with Luton holding most of the possession, managing to get the in D a few times but just couldn’t hit the target. Luton’s defence were up against it with the young Saffron forwards showing their pace, and some switching around had to be made to ensure that they didn’t get in any goal scoring positions. Tara Clancy showing excellent defensive work tracking back and forth up the left wing, wherever the ball was, she was. Rotating in the subs gave Luton the advantage, to get some fresh legs on the pitch. Saffron Waldon got a shot off in the D which was expertly saved by goal keeper Sharna Goughs stick, deflecting it off behind the goal. First half finishing 0-0
Second half started off very much like the first, Luton winning a short corner a few minutes in, Gale Charles stepped up to the mark but unfortunately couldn’t get her name on the score sheet. Saffron Waldon with another strike saved by Gough made a brilliant block with her feet to stop Luton conceding. 10 minutes into the second half Kerri Wheadon working with Tasnien Ferdous and Helen Beattie attacked the opposition D with Kerri getting the first and only goal of the match.
Some brilliant work by Emma Halsey, picking balls of Saffron players in the middle of the pitch, and Siobhan Barden showing strong defending gave Luton the well-deserved 3 points.
