Luton Town Ladies 1st XI had another great win this week in their race for promotion, against Hertford 3s.
The game started off strong for Luton, Suzanne Starkey scoring from a short corner three minutes after the opening whistle.
Luton’s dominance continued following this, with lots of fantastic team hockey played, with short passes that allowed the girls to weave their way around the Hertford defence. However, the girls struggled to find the back of the net again during the remainder of the half, with many a shot being sent wide of the posts!
Luton’s closest opportunity to extend their lead came late in the first half, with a fantastic cross into the circle that Charlotte Dunham got a reverse touch on. Despite sailing into the net, the goal was disallowed for touching the back of Dunham’s stick, and Luton’s lead remained at 1-0 at half time.
The strong play continued in the second half, with Luton maintaining the majority of the possession on the ball. Luton finally got the opportunity to extend their lead 10 minutes after the restart, with a strike from Suzanne Starkey finding the backboard.
With the girls now slightly further out of the danger zone, they were able to settle more into the game, which gave the opportunity for their youngest team members to shine! Ellie Shadbolt-Mackay had a fantastic game on the right, with lots of lateral runs and some great set-ups in the circle.
Player of the Match Kate Starkey had an equally brilliant game on the left wing, showing lots of determination in her tackles, creating lots of opportunities in the circle and even having a couple of shots herself!
Following several more missed opportunities, the fate of the game was sealed by Chelsea Wright, whose lifted cross into the circle was touched home by a Hertford defender, sealing the deal at 3-0 to Luton.
A fantastic game from the girls, who will be taking on Welwyn away at 10am next weekend.
